My inner feminist is confused. As elan reported last week, Kuwait has just introduced a new ladies-only taxi service. The Pepto-Bismol pink cars are driven exclusively by women and only accept female customers, catering to Kuwaiti women who are sick of being harassed on the streets by male drivers. Many of the pink taxis come equipped with mirrors and magazines, so ladies can read how best to apply their lip gloss and practice while they are on the go. (If you can’t tell, I think this aspect of the taxi service is slightly moronic).

In an op-ed for USA Today, Souheila Al-Jadda argues that the “sinister Muslim” stereotype is fading in Hollywood by providing examples of characters that have stepped out of the Muslims-bent-on-destroying-the-world box that the media has inconveniently placed us all in. An Egyptian human rights organization has revealed that Arab governments have been engaging in violations that include torture, extra-judicial executions, and repressive laws, while blocking reforms that guarantee their citizens basic rights. The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies says that rights have deteriorated significantly over the past year as governments continue to restrict freedom of the press, suppress human rights activists and discriminate against religious minorities.
