Our mosques are riddled with youth who lack a truly Islamic identity, and we ourselves are often-times confused at how to instill that identity in their lives. Many problems that existed ‘back home’ are now being compounded in the American experience, such as divorce and spousal abuse, but because of cultural taboos, communities are reluctant to publicly discuss them. There is also the very real concern, post 9/11, that our religious loyalties are being viewed with extreme suspicion, and our very allegiance to America is being questioned. These conflicts require solutions that emanate not only from our Orthodox tradition and understanding of Islam, but also by taking into account the modern realities that we experience.
