Colbert Reports on Yemen Fever

By elan on from www.elanthemag.com

Last week, elan reported on the world’s recent discovery of the nation of Yemen (and as a major threat to national security no less). The reverberations of this huge discovery are still being felt this week. Did you know, for instance, that “Iraq is yesterday’s war” and that “Yemen will be tomorrow’s war”? I learned this from Joe Lieberman. He said it on Fox News, so it must be true. Read More

IMAN’s Community Cafe Returns to NYC

When the Inner-city Muslim Action Network (IMAN) brought a special edition of their Community Cafe to New York City last year, the event was nothing less than amazing. Big crowd, great entertainment and lots of energy set the tone for the night as IMAN created an atmosphere that fused together art and culture to inspire attendees to take actions that launch positive changes in their community and themselves.Read More

UAE Saves Dubai, Now Football?

By elan on from www.elanthemag.com

News broke last week that a rich Emirati Sheikh was set to purchase the Spanish football (or soccer if you count in US dollars) team, Real Madrid, for a whopping $1 Billion. The story, originally published in a Spanish magazine, revealed a supposedly secret plan by UAE Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan to buy up the team to add to his expanding list of sports acquisitions. The Sheikh already owns the minor league Manchester City football club in Britain, and is the President of the Abu Dhabi Al Jazira Sports Club.Read More

Mideast Food Co. Rips Off America

Apparently, pulling one over good ol’ Uncle Sam isn’t that difficult these days. This past week the U.S. Chief District Attorney filed an indictment against a Kuwaiti owned and operated food company that was resplendent in some unsavory criminal charges. According to court papers, Agility (formerly known as the Public Warehousing Company) engaged in dishonest business practices in regard to contracts it won to feed U.S. troops in Kuwait, Iraq and Jordan from 2003-2005. Read More

Gaza Freedom March Gears Up for December 31st - Here’s How to Show Your Support

It has been nearly one year since Israel’s 22-day attack on Gaza last December-January. More than 1,400 Palestinians died in the siege, including hundreds of children, and the neighborhoods of Gaza were left in ravages. It was an atrocity of epic proportions, but at least one good thing has come of it. For the first time since Israel’s founding, we are hearing mainstream criticism of its policies and increased action from Palestine solidarity activists. Read More

Muslim Rep Voted Cool in Congress, While Gawker Blasts Crazy Troll Opponent

By elan on from www.elanthemag.com

Well, at least there’s one Muslim that Washington insiders seem to like. Representative Keith Ellison, a Democratic Congressman from Minnesota and a Muslim, was voted the fourth most “admired” member of the House of Representatives by his fellow politicians. The survey, published by the National Journal, is an annual tradition on Capitol Hill, sort of like being voted prom king at the end of senior year. So what if Ellison actually tied for fourth (with fellow Democrats Barney Frank, John Lewis and Henry Waxman)? He’s still the Congressional prom king in my eyes. Read More

A month after it was scheduled to begin, the Gaza Film Festival finally took place from December 5th to the 8th.  But this wasn’t your average film festival. No paparazzi. No red carpets. No glitz. No glam. This festival was about much more than parties and awards; it was about the struggles of the Palestinian people.Read More

To say that the 33rd annual Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) was overshadowed by the Egypt-Algeria World Cup qualifying match is putting it lightly. The 10-day festival went practically unnoticed, but for attendees, there was plenty to be excited about. Read More
