Libyan rebels make fresh advances

Pro-democracy fighters have made fresh advances in both the east and the west of Libya, gaining ground against forces loyal to the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, reports say.

In the west, the fighters managed to to force government troops into retreat from the town of Kikla, about 150km southwest of the capital, Tripoli, on Tuesday, news agencies said.

The new documents show that Porter Goss, the then CIA chief, agreed with the decision to destroy the tapes, though they show he did not know of the destruction until after it occurred. Iran criticises US nuclear summit

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president, has condemned a nuclear security summit in the US, where international leaders are meeting to work out a global nuclear security strategy.

Representatives from 47 nations gathered in Washington, DC on Monday for the start of the two-day summit hosted by Barack Obama, the US president.

Obama began the gathering with a series of bilateral meetings with some of the world leaders gathered for the summit.

But Ahmadinejad, whose country was not invited to attend the conference, called the meeting "humiliating to humanity".
