Campus Climate towards Muslims at University: UCSD

Campus Climate towards Muslims at University: UCSD

Article on a student's perspective of the relationship between university and the Muslim students. This one pertains to University of California at San Diego.

Although I often joke about it, many of the UCSD students whom I talk to concerning Islam are still ignorant when it comes to which term (Islam or Muslim) designates the religion and which the follower. I don’t mean to discourage people from asking me this, or any other questions regarding Islam, but the failure to pass this basic litmus test makes me question how much the UCSD campus and the overall climate for and toward Muslims have changed over the years.

When Muslim students and community members sat down for Friday prayer on Feb. 15 in Anabel Taylor Hall, they sought spiritual peace and a sense of solidarity with fellow Muslims.

What they encountered, however, was a sermon laden with homophobic slurs, according to attendees.

“Not all homosexuals are pedophiles, but all pedophiles are homosexuals,” the individual said, according to Ihsan Kabir ’14, president of the Committee for the Advancement of Muslim Culture.

The individual — who was previously a University employee — then shouted remarks targeting the LGBTQ community, criticizing President Barack Obama for “being too liberal” in his acceptance of homosexuality.

It’s not that these aren’t great universities. But c’mon. Can you really say with any precision that Princeton is “better” than Columbia? That the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (No. 6) is better than the California Institute of Technology (No. 10)? That Tufts (No. 28) is better than Brandeis (No. 33)?

Of course not. U.S. News likes to claim that it uses rigorous methodology, but, honestly, it’s just a list put together by magazine editors. The whole exercise is a little silly. Or rather, it would be if it weren’t so pernicious.
