A Game Can Change A Life

It is a simple thing just a ball and a goal – Soccer. The most popular game played and viewed around the world. Soccer reaches far beyond the limits of its lush green pitch (field); it rallies neighbors, provides hope to citizens, gives countries respect and a sense of honor.
.
For Abdul Rahman Sesay, a Sierra Leone teenager, it actually helped save his life amist his country’s horrible ciivil war. Between 1991 and 2001, about 50,000 people were killed in Sierra Leone’s civil war. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced from their homes, and many became refugees in Guinea and Liberia.
.
@Heart is honored to sit with Abdul and have him recollect his amazing story how his skills in soccer provided a way to escape the refugee camps, attend the Guinea Soccer Club team, and provide an undergraduate scholarship to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

NFL practices this time of year are designed for maximum sweat production. Coaches are trying to build up stamina and endurance. Players push themselves to the limit, in pursuit of jobs and starting spots. It's also really, really hot.

And starting on Aug. 11, the beginning of the Islamic month of Ramadan, Minnesota Vikings safety Husain Abdullah(notes) will be going through these practices without the benefit of water. Or food. Or any other kind of hydration.

During Ramadan, observing Muslims like Abdullah will fast for 30 days; eating or drinking nothing while the sun is out. Food and drink are permitted after dark and before sunrise, but during the day, there's nada -- not a tiny little sip of water, or the smallest release of Powerade's mystic mountain blueberry.

As the Holy Month of Ramadan approaches, many Muslims soccer players are faced with a dilemma. Naturally, fasting takes a toll on the body, fatiguing it and lowering its performance level. Thus, footballers are faced with a tough decision, sacrificing their work performance or their religious obligations. Last year, the club team FSV Frankfurt gave three players a warning for fasting, as their contracts contained a clause stating that fasting was not permitted without permission from the club.

Nicolas Anelka, one of the top Muslim soccer players in the world, was recently kicked off the French team after a disagreement with coach Raymond Domenech. The situation started when Anelka, after a poor initial performance, was benched for the second half of Thursday’s Mexico-France matchup. He did not react well to this benching, supposedly embarking upon a profanity-laced tirade against his coach. It’s unclear just how audible Anelka’s tirade was - initial reports suggested that Anelka was shouting at Domenech, while subsequent reports have suggested that Anelka was speaking quietly and under his breath.

Soccer’s World Cup 2010 is just a few days away and for the first time the World Cup will be hosted by South Africa. This has led to much controversy amongst South African Muslims as to whether the World Cup is a good or bad thing and if it is permissible to watch it and support the team.

Egypt’s Africa Cup Victory: Celebrating Everywhere

I woke up Sunday morning to the sounds of car horns blaring and crowds chanting. In New York, this is not uncommon and on any ordinary Sunday, it is more than a little annoying. But on this Sunday, January 31, this was the sweet sound of victory. And no, I’m not talking about the Jets either. Egypt had won the Africa Cup for the third straight year in a row.
