Social media in Indonesia: Eat, pray, tweet

By HijabGirl on from www.economist.com

Indonesia is now the world’s second-largest market for Facebook and the third-largest for Twitter, according to several web research firms. For industry insiders, however, the most exciting statistic is not how many Indonesians use social media, but how many still don’t. Of 230m or so Indonesians, fewer than 20% are connected to the internet.

Foreign firms see untapped potential.

Indonesian clerics declare civet coffee Halal | Halal Media

By kamarul on from halalmedia.my

Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) declared today that civet coffee (locally known as Kopi Luwak) is Halal and can be consumed by Muslims as long as the beans are thoroughly cleansed before grinding.

Kopi Luwak is produced from coffee beans which have been eaten by the Luwak or Asian palm civet or other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract system and excreted.

After thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans would yield an aromatic, smooth flavored and bitterless aftertaste coffee. It is also widely noted as the most expensive coffee in the world, selling between US$100 and $600 per pound.

The MUI acting head Maruf Amien said the coffee beans that were excreted by the nocturnal critters were considered mutanajis (afflicted with something unclean).
