It's interesting how quickly news spreads on the internet without a simple checking of sources. Making the rounds on social media and certain websites is a story that James Holmes, dubbed the “Dark Knight killer” for opening fire at a screening of the The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and injuring 58, has converted to Islam. Additionally, the story claiming this states he did so in order to justify his murder spree as striking back against the “infidels”.
Very interesting, I thought, except the National Enquirer was quoted as the source, so it seemed like a hoax or another tabloid story, but then the Washington Times quoted the story and gave it more legitimacy. But is it legitimate? Maybe, but as of today, it's looking pretty shaky.
The Meaning of Tawba (Repentance from Sins)

Being protecting of matters of Sharīʿah is only possible for the Muslim by him/her being swift towards tawba from each wrongful action committed. It is also necessary to refrain from persistence [doing repeatedly] in sin. One can avoid being considered as someone who is persistently sinning, by making tawba for every sin committed (meaning “persistence” does not mean repeating the sin, rather it is repeating sins without making tawba). If one repeatedly sins, let him renew his tawba for such repetition, even if this process occurs many times; there is no sickness for which a cure does not exist [the cure for sins is repentance].

I believe our speaking capital is better invested in teaching habits of worship that are practically integrated in the life of the typical Muslim. By doing so, Ramaḍān stops acting as a time of crash-and-burn binge worship and turns into a framework for building habits that should be at the core of every Muslim's daily life. The first habit this series will look to develop is teaching the reader one method that has been successful in developing the ability to wake at 4 am daily (translation: this is how I did it, but it's not the only way to get the job done).

How should we Muslim react to mockery of our Prophet Muḥammad ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) or should we even react at all?
Just like the cartoons few years ago, the Muslim response to the recent film has been very diverse. From the very mild of responses to the very violent ones, what's most noteworthy is the enormity of the response. Despite the consensus that the film did not deserve the attention it was getting, social media kept being flooded, and still is, with messages defending the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). So, before another incident of mockery takes place, since it seems that it's only a matter of time before someone else tries to play on the sensitivities of Muslims, let's take some time to examine what the Qur'an has to say about this very issue.
