Social media in Indonesia: Eat, pray, tweet

Social media in Indonesia: Eat, pray, tweet

By HijabGirl on from www.economist.com

Indonesia is now the world’s second-largest market for Facebook and the third-largest for Twitter, according to several web research firms. For industry insiders, however, the most exciting statistic is not how many Indonesians use social media, but how many still don’t. Of 230m or so Indonesians, fewer than 20% are connected to the internet.

Foreign firms see untapped potential.

WTFatwa: Light Beams May Replace Adhans in France - Muslims Get Their Own Bat Call

Oh France, you’ve really done it this time. First, the French took issue with the Muslim headscarf. Then they figured, let’s go after the ‘Burqa’ to really make Muslim women look like “us”. And, while the French are busy thinking up their next plot to defame the religion of Islam, it seems that some Muslims in France are embarking on their own misguided attempts to thwart the French discrimination. This is one weird preemptive strike though.

What do you think of when you see a sister who isn’t wearing hijab? How about a brother who is laughing with many girls?
Ever look down on them? Think you’re better than them? It’s easy to be self-righteous. It’s even easier to fall prey to this attitude if you sport the ‘righteous’ look.

A mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam. Muslims often refer to the mosque by its Arabic name, masjid. They have developed significantly from the open-air spaces that were the Quba Mosque and Al-Masjid al-Nabawi in the 7th century. Many mosques have elaborate domes, minarets, and prayer halls. Mosques originated on the Arabian Peninsula, but are now found in all inhabited continents.

THE Powerful Testimony of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

By MuslimMatters on from muslimmatters.org

Aafia Siddiqui – a daughter, a sister, a mother of three, committed Muslim, social scientist, hafiz of Qur’an – needed to be heard. For years she had suffered in virtual silence…aching to be heard, to be understood, to have certain malicious untruths corrected and exposed for the lies they were. That day finally came on Thursday, January 28, 2010!

Muslim Stereotypes in Hollywood: Are they really fading?

Muslim Stereotypes in Hollywood: Are they really fading?

By elan on from www.elanthemag.com

Long gone are the days of Not Without My Daughter and The Princess and the Marine, (thank goodness!) but has Hollywood changed their attitude toward Muslims? In an op-ed for USA Today, Souheila Al-Jadda argues that the “sinister Muslim” stereotype is fading in Hollywood by providing examples of characters that have stepped out of the Muslims-bent-on-destroying-the-world box that the media has inconveniently placed us all in. But do a few examples mean that the “sinister Muslim” stereotype is actually fading? And what about other Muslim stereotypes that remain in Hollywood?
